“I will pay you ... join me in my seat for the night ... make it $300 ... I’d love to explore you”
2023 august 9th
on an amtrak train in
Rural Montana
My family took an amtrak train ride. We boarded in the midwest; our destination was portland. We were on our way to a family reunion.
We were a large group, 2 parents, several preteen and teenage children, spread across 2 rows of seats.
on the second day of the trip, my kids and I were in the lounge car at a booth, watching the scenery and coloring.
We were about 10 feet from our seats, which were at the front of the next car just behind the lounge. My partner was asleep in one.
My daughter, 12, returned to her seat to grab a bottle of water.
On her seat was a note, addressed to “cute girl in 63 window”.
the note
“Hi there.
I apologize for being so forward (and for the awful train—ride handwriting).
I thought you were spectacular from the moment I saw you, and I was wondering if you would entertain an unorthodox offer.
i will venmo or paypal you $250 - if you would be willing to join me in my seat for the night, bring your blanket, play some cards and mess around. if you’re not interested, throw this away.
if you are interested, email me at: danteclimbing@yahoo.com and I’ll send you my # and seat assignment.
if you’re game, I’d love to hang out + explore you. we can exchange photos first, if you like.
totally serious. and I’ll actually make it $300. —
-C.”
In distinctive handwriting, the note offers a payment
of $250 - no, $300 - to my daughter in exhange for her company “for the night”, including a request to “explore you”.
She was 12 - a tall 12, at 5'5", but certainly underage, with a baby face.
We looked up the email. danteclimbing@yahoo.com led immediately to an instagram account, Danteclimbing, which has since been marked private. But we recognized the man on the instagram acccount as a short portly man with long red hair who sat next to the stairs. he had smiled at her, she remembered.
The instagram account identified him as Jeremy Buzan. We found a matching facebook account for Jeremy Buzan of Beaverton Oregon, a suburb of Portland, the final destination of our train.
We contacted the conductor. He confirmed that there was indeed a Jeremy Buzan aboard the train, and he was seated in the seat we identified. He approached the man, saying “Jeremy Buzan?”
The man responded affirmatively.
At the next stop, in Cut Bank Montana, Jeremy Buzan was ejected from the train.
He protested, but the conductor offered to explain the situation to local authorities. He left. he was banned from amtrak.
amtrak police
When we arrived the next day in Portland, I immediately contacted Amtrak Police.
After a year, the officer reached out to indicate that the prosecutor would not pursue charges.
Jeremy would have to be charged under Montana law, and there was no physical contact, making assault charges impossible.
The prosecutor felt they could not prove the note was intended for my preteen daughter, nor could they prove that it was an attempt to solicit sexual activity for payment.
there would be no charges.

my daughter had only sat in 1 seat - 63 window - and the observation car on that trip. besides me, she was the only girl in our party, and in our immediate area. I only sat in 62 aisle. the letter was addressed to her seat number. In addition, she remembered Jeremy Buzan making eye contact with her and smiling at her when she went down the stairs to use the restroom on our car. She thought at the time he was just being polite, but it stuck in her mind since he has a distinctive appearance.

I waited for the criminal justice system to decide not to pursue charges. I did not want to complicate a potential criminal case. Now that I know no charges will be filed, I want to let others know what happened.
-
first, some of his friends and family have confirmed that is his handwriting
second, while it might be technically possible for some other passenger to imitate his handwriting, reference his email, and leave the note on the seat of a girl he had smiled at on the train, it seems exceedingly unlikely. he was traveling alone, no passengers on the train knew him including my family.
-
amtrak can only charge in the jurisdiction where the train was located when the crime occurred. Montana laws made it difficult to charge without either physical touch, or a provable intent. the prosecutor felt it could not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the letter was meant for my child, and that it was offering money for sexual contact, since “explore you” and “mess around” are legally vague
-
she is a confident, strong kid who stands up for herself. she unfortunately understood exactly what the letter meant, and told the conductor about it herself while pointing at Jeremy Buzan, right in front of him. She was as offended by his audacity as anything. She sees a therapist weekly but mostly prefers to focus on what actually matters to her - high school coursework and friend drama.

it is very difficult and costly to prove emotional harm without physical contact, and would require me to disclose my daughter’s identity to jeremy.
